On May 22nd, the GACSB ventured down to St. Simons Island for the 19th Annual Spring Fling Consumer Conference.

This year, 184 individuals served by the GACSB’s member organizations were in attendance, making it the largest Spring Fling ever for the Association.  The event took place at Sea Palms Resort over a span of three days, and featured speakers from all over the state such as author, Kevin Hines and his wife and caregiver, Margaret Hines, Bill Carruthers (Gateway Behavioral Health Services), Roslind Hayes (GA Mental Health Consumer Network), Chris Johnson (Georgia Council on Substance Abuse), Joel Slack (RESPECT Institute of GA), June DiPolito (Pineland Community Service Board), Bryant Wiggins (formerly of Unison Behavioral Health), Gale Speich (GA Vocational Rehabilitation Agency—Brunswick), and Dan Howell, Katherine McKenzie, Jose Lopez, and Doug Scott (GA Dept. of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities).

This year’s Spring Fling also featured two separate peer panels composed of individuals with lived experience in either the area of mental health and/or substance abuse and those living with an Intellectual or Developmental  Disabilities.   For the first time this year, the Spring Fling also included a session which allowed an opportunity for individuals served by mental health or substance abuse programs with a CSB to share their lived experience testimonies.  This portion of the event featured a number of remarkable first-hand experiences that consistently echoed that recovery and wellness is possible!

Other portions of the event included door prizes for those in attendance, a health and fitness session, a talent show, and an evening out on the beach with all of those in attendance along with the event staff and personnel from the Glynn County Fire Department, Glynn County Volunteer Firefighters, Inc., Glynn County Fire EMS, Golden Isles Emerald Society and the Glynn County Police Dept.!
